China delay coal exports on power shortages

China may delay coal exports on power shortages
By Nao Nakanishi
HONG
KONG, Jan 24 (Reuters) - China may delay coal exports to help relieve severe power shortages ahead of the Lunar New Year early next month, traders said on Thursday, further tightening strained supply in Asia that has driven prices to record highs.
Beijing has called on miners and those involved in transport to make supplying domestic power generators a top priority, as plants struggle to secure coal and others shut down capacity rather than generate electricity at a loss.
"There will be deferrals," said a trader at an international house.
"Maybe they won't ship much until the second quarter."
In the second half of 2007, Chinese monthly exports averaged 5 million tonnes, versus 3.8 million tonnes in the first half, as miners took advantage of surging global prices. It was not immediately clear how many cargoes China sold for shipment before end-February, when the 2007 export quotas expire....

chrome ore South Africa

"...Nevertheless, he expressed some anxiety and frustration, noting that the development only received board sanction at a meeting in Vienna on September 2006 and that at the time access to adequate power supply was taken as given. He was hopeful, though, that solutions would be found, which would enable the new facility to process locally sourced chrome ore and imported Chinese magnesite ore into fused magnesia-chrome.Much of the product would be exported to feed steel mills, which are experiencing strong demand for their product, particularly out of the fast-growing economies of Asia...."

manganese ore Port Elizabeth

“I would like to stay here. I have not seen much but I can see that it is good here, not like in East Africa. I think there is a job here.” The 190m-long New Auspicious was loading 22 000 tons of manganese ore in the PE harbour yesterday. The ore will be transported to Korea, said Capt Lim Xing Shun.
Asked about the stowaways, he said the crew heard nothing when they were beating on the hatch because of the noise and because that part of the ship was seldom used.

With such
turmoil on global stock exchanges, one might wonder if Xstrata CEO Mick Davis and Vale CEO Roger Agnelli are trying to perform their proposed merger/takeover – difficult enough at the best of times – on the deck of a financial Titanic.
On Monday, many stock exchanges around the world witnessed the worst single day decline since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The TSX saw $90 billion evaporate while European exchanges wiped out $300 billion. In total, trillions of dollars in investment value were lost. The U.S. exchanges were closed for a holiday..."

VSL iron ore

" ...Iron ore VSL has entered into long-term agreement with OMDC and SESA Goa for supply of iron ore. It is in the process of obtaining iron ore mines on lease in Orissa, which would provide significant benefits in terms of assured raw material supply at a low cost. However we have not factored in the benefits of the same on a conservative note. In addition, the benefits of chrome ore also would help the company contain its cost. The company sources its chrome ore requirement from markets at average procurement cost of Rs 9500 per tonne which is slated to come down to Rs 1400 per tonne over the next 1.5 - 2 years once production from its 89% subsidiary, Ghotaringa Minerals commences.... Hey Al, Since When Is Coal Renewable?

"...Hey Al, Since When Is Coal Renewable?

Al Gore has responded to the controversy surrounding his mansion’s exorbitant power use by saying that his power use is excused because he purchases his power from Tennessee Valley Authority’s “Green Power Switch” program which claims to get all of its power from renewable sources.
After perusing the TVA Green Switch website, however, that just doesn’t seem to be true. At least part of the “green switch” power comes from the burning of methane gas from human waste. Which is a renewable source, but in order for the methane to be effective it is “co-fired” with coal.
Which, the last time I checked, isn’t exactly a renewable source. ..."

Not exactly renewable, but there is still lots of it....
